Who would be the audience for our media product?
For our opening title sequence, we were hoping to target an audience with an age range of 15-18 year olds. We specifically chose this age range because, as all the characters in the OTS are of a similar age, their personalities would be easily familiarised with the audience. We also chose to aim it at older teenagers because a new and unique horror film, nothing like they've seen before, would be high in the interests of many teenagers.
For our interviews, we selected not only our chosen age group, but also people of older and younger ages to find out if our sub-genre, slasher, appealed to other ages as well. By doing this, we were able to see that our initial chosen age range was the most suitable for our horror OTS. It proved to us that the film is too scary for younger children and is not suitable for them. It also proved that it was very appealing for people of our chosen age range and that it was most suited to 15-18 year olds. It also showed to us that despite the adult opinion we received about how effective and scary the OTS was, it wasn't the best suited to that age range as it was too scary and not what they enjoy to watch.
The reason for doing this interview and getting people's opinions was very valuable to us because it showed us who enjoyed it and who didn't and that people outside of the age range didn't enjoy it as much. By asking people of different age groups we were able to see how they reacted to it and confirmed to us that 15-18 year olds was the correct target audience we are aiming it at. This was because for younger children, it was too inappropriate and frightening, and for adults, it was too irrelevant and unappealing for them. But for teenagers it is the ideal film for them to watch and appeals to them the most.
