In media we use multiple terms to describe and explain why certain people have made specific ideas to clips in media. These terms describe the reasons why directors/producers decide their ideas. Terms would include things that would describe why clips have been put in a way or how sound has been edited in to make a scene more effective.
We will now explain the following terms:
Non diegetic sound- Non diegetic is the opposite of the term 'diegetic'. Non diegetic sound is a term which i when sound is edited into a specific clips(s). media production teams would use non diegetic sound to add emphasis to something that has happened within a scene or because the specific sound that the production team wanted could not be produced in real life or it could not be done legally e.g a gun shot. Examples of non diegetic sounds would be a gun shot as well as stabbing of a knife, the sound of a punch, footsteps, animal noises any sound effect is technically classed as non diegetic.
Diegetic sound- Diegetic sound is the opposite of 'non- diegetic sound '. Diegetic sound is when sound within a clip happened within the physical clip itself, no editing has been conducted to make that specific sound. The sound would come from something that can be seen from the footage that is being shown to the audience in the clips. Examples of diegetic sound would be like a telephone ring (if a phone is within the clip) or a doorbell sound (if the doorbell is shown on the clip).
Contrapuntal sound- Contrapuntal sound is when sound that is being played doesn't match the theme or ideas represented within the form of media. This would be implemented in a piece of media because it shows a change in mentality from the clip and represents something away from the norm. It gives a sense of confusion to the audience in a deliberate way. Examples of contrapuntal sound would be when a death scene is occurring and the song "happy and you know it" starts playing as well as the real life example of the torture scene within reservoir dogs.
Parallel sound- Parallel sound is the opposite of contrapuntal sound. Parallel sound is when the music or any type of sound suits/matches the specific situation that is happening in the footage. this would be used because director's would want this in a production because they would want the audience to feel a specific emotion or connection towards a situation that is happening on screen. an example of this happening would be in scream, in scream all sounds are nerve wracking and intense to make the audience feel nervous and intense and therefore have the feeling paranoid.
Dialogue- Dialogue is when characters or actors speak their lines. This is chosen over silence to learn about the personality and thinking pattens of certain characters, it also shows the natural reactions of certain people as well.
Soundtrack- A soundtrack is when a piece of music is played over footage or played with the footage. This would be used within a a movie or opening title sequence because the music would set a mood for the audience, whether that mood would be depressing or happy would depend on the soundtrack along side the clips(s).
